The Main Differences Between RV Resorts & RV Campgrounds

Before you can hit the road on your next RV trip, you need to figure out where you’re going to stay. These pit stops along your vacation might not be the highlight of your trip, but they can certainly contribute (or detract) from you and your family’s overall enjoyment. You want more than just a place to park your RV for a night. Here, we’ll take a look at the main differences between RV resorts and RV campgrounds to make sure your trip is optimized.

Privacy

A common complaint of RV campgrounds is the lack of privacy. Just like a standard campground, the spaces are so close together that it can sometimes feel like your sharing a lot with your neighbors. RV resorts are a completely different story. With more space in between each site, you and your family won’t feel suffocated. Furthermore, RV resorts are consciously designed to maximize privacy while not much thought is gone into the placement of campground sites.

Space

Whether you’re driving a Class A, B, or C RV, you still appreciate all the extra space available when parking for the night. In general, RV resorts are more spacious than their campground counterparts due to their fundamental differences. While RV campgrounds place higher stress on persevering the natural surroundings for atmosphere, RV resorts are focused on accommodating guests. This typically results in larger, more conveniently sized lots that make it easier to get around. RV campgrounds are often located in national or state parks which further limits their size. However, RV resorts are often located in areas where expansion isn’t limited.

Amenities

When traveling in an RV, you’re giving up access to everyday amenities for greater mobility and freedom. While it’s unquestionably worth the tradeoff for a while, it’s always nice to reconnect with the convenience of these amenities throughout your trip. If you’re looking for showers, washing machines, dryers, WiFi access, eateries, and fitness centers, you’re not going to have much luck at an RV campground. These rudimentary spaces typically don’t offer much beyond a bathroom and maybe an electrical hookup if you’re lucky.  RV resorts, on the other hand, have all of the convenience you’re craving when on the road.

Location

Location, location, location. It’s a major consideration when choosing where to park your RV for the night. You want something close enough to the national and state parks and other natural features you’re planning to see on your trip. But you also don’t want it too far away from the convenience and amenities of civilization. While campgrounds get you very close to the nature you want to see on your trip, they’re typically hard to access and far away from any nearby town. RV resorts give you the best of both worlds as they’re often located close enough to access the main sights on your trip quickly while still giving you access to restaurants, stores, gas stations, and other conveniences you need on your trip

Safety

Security is another area in which RV resorts outperform campground options. When you’re enjoying an RV trip with your family, the last thing you want to worry about is the safety of you and your loved ones. Although it’s not as common as home burglaries, RVs are still targeted by petty criminals. At an RV campground, you’re more or less on your own. There might be some rudimentary safety measures in place but nothing quite as robust as what you’ll have in an RV resort. It’s common for these places to have private security, security cameras, gates, fences, and more. Even though the chances of being targeted when on an RV trip is rare, having that extra peace of mind is worth it.
